Update…

First, thanks for all the well-wishing. I’m feeling very fortunate to have so many kind people concerned about my welfare.

For an update – I’ll have to cancel my shows for next week, but Jonatha will still be playing, and I’d highly recommend checking her show out if you haven’t seen her live before. I should be able to be back on the road (with an accompinaist) for the show on the 31st in Northampton. Perhaps my costume will be the One-Armed Man from the Fugitive…

I’ll be having surgery tomorrow morning, and will know much more about the state of my nerves after the doctor has had a chance to poke around in there. I currently have an 80% loss of ulnar nerve function below the elbow in the left arm, and the speed and degree of recovery will depend on the precise nature of the damage and numerous other, less predictable factors.

All said, I’m in surprisingly good spirits. It’s going to be a challenge to get to the other side of this, but I’ve been feeling like I needed a new challenge recently. This isn’t exacly the one I expected, but what ever really is?

Here’s my myspace style picture from my phone in the emergency room:

    Glen. glen glen glen.

This is no good! Not only the guitar, but what of the Ultimate games?!

In all seriousness, I’m sending all the best wishes to you (all the way from Iraq!) and your family, and hoping for a speedy and painless recovery.

    Kyle

  • shauna:

Get better soon. (All the way better.)

I’m sorry you’re going through this. You don’t know me, but I love your shows and my thoughts are with you.

    Oh Glen!
    How gruesome.
Best of luck with surgrey tomorrow.
    I’ll be thinking of you.
You’ll beat this challenge and come out on the other side stronger than ever.

Best wishes for a speedy & complete recovery.

When I see you next, we’ll have to compare scars.
    :)

  • Good luck with the surgery tomorrow and I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery. Glad to hear that you’ll be back on the road. Hope you can make the December Milwaukee show.

  • Sean:

    Wow.
    Hope the surgery goes well.
As far as the recovery goes, the only way out is through, one foot in front of the other.

  • eurgh. that looks nasty. many wishes for fruitful nerve regeneration.

  • ladysoleil:

Ouch is not even the word I would begin to use to describe that. Wishing you all the best for surgery and a quick recovery.

Coffee tables are evil. We had to get rid of ours after a friend sat on it. Thankfully he was fine, but the table didn’t make it.

  • Lynn:

I screamed when I saw your pic of your injury. (I’ll never buy a glass coffee table, I think I had one 15 years ago and somebody broke it w/o injury.)

I hope all goes well with your surgery, I guess you’ll have physical therapy as well. Good luck and have a speedy recovery!

  • I can see why you passed out. Just looking at the pic makes me want to do the same… I guess that’s why coffee tables are SUPPOSED to be made with tempered (safety) glass, huh?

I’ll be keeping you and your surgeon in my thoughts!

  • laurenomelette:

ah, that looks like it hurts. I’m sorry. everything will be okay. fucking table.

  • Kimble! Yes! You’re fabulous, you’ll pull through. Best thoughts! Rest, rest, rest.

  • [...] PS- he’s posted an update… as of 10/12, he thinks he’ll be back on tour by 10/31, not playing guitar, but at least singing.  Read more here: http://glenphillips.net/blog/?p=76 [...]

I’m so sorry for what happened to you. I’m more upset than if it had happened to me. Dee and I are sending you our love, best wishes, thoughts, prayers, positive energy, and anything else we can think of. Get well soon.

Glen, Glen, Glen…I hope your post-surgery recovery is going well. That “cut” reminds me of the one I got when my older brother slammed the kitchen door on me when I was ten and my arm when through the window. I hope you have a speedy recovery free of complications. Peace.

  • alizarin:

Glen!!! Major bummer. I will pray prodigiously for you. I mean it. Keep up those surprisingly good spirits!
    Lots of Love,
    Ange

Many happy thoughts and prayers heading your way from your French friends. We’ll have to come back for an LA visit and catch you at Largo after your full and complete recovery (positive thoughts… positive thoughts…). Thanks for all you’ve given to so many of us. You are appreciated!

  • No matter what, we’ll see you in Portland! And really, it’s not the worst thing in the world if Kingham has to play for you. :)

  • Dan Muhs:

Hi Glen–Oh my God! Hang in there, pardner! You have a tremendous spirit (as is evident in your blog and in everything you write) and you have LOTS of folks thinking of you and sending good vibes. Hope the surgery went well and that you gain complete recovery of that wonderful guitar-playing arm/hand/fingers. All your fans here in Colorado are thinking of you and hoping for a speedy recovery. All the best, my friend, to you and your family–your geological buddy Dan Muhs

OW! I showed this photo to my 8-year-old daughter to emphasize why she isn’t allowed to run in the house. Not that you were running in the house, but it could have happened that way! Anyway… this is what she said: “Please tell him I feel badly for him and i hope it doesn’t hurt too bad and he gets better fast!” She is a fan, btw… and I hope you recover swiftly and completely as well!
